Visit tips
Thank you for being part of Sunshine Visit and doing the beautiful mitzvah of Bikur Cholim, visiting the sick. A short, warm visit means the world.
Before you go
- Check the visiting hours in your text. Many places ask you to sign in at the front desk.
- If you feel sick, please stay home and text "I can't make it". We'll find someone else.
- Bring something small if you like: Shabbos candles on Friday, a Tehillim, a card from the Hebrew school kids, a photo of the shul.
During the visit
- Introduce yourself: "Hi, I'm ___ from Chabad of Bradenton & Lakewood Ranch. I came to say hello."
- Sit at eye level, smile, and let them lead. Listening is the biggest gift.
- 15 to 30 minutes is perfect. If they look tired, keep it short.
- Ask about their life, family, where they grew up. Sing a niggun if they enjoy music.
- Don't give medical advice, and keep anything private they share.
After the visit
- That evening you'll get a text asking how it went. A line or two is plenty.
- If anything worries you (they seem worse, they asked for the Rabbi, they need something), say so in your reply and Rabbi Mendy and Chanie will get it right away.
- In an emergency, tell the staff on site first.
